Valvona & Crolla

Long ago, in the less than adventurous world of post-war eating in Scotland, there was a certain shop in Edinburgh where the sun always shone. Valvona & Crolla was different, and almost a legend. Now, in the 21st century, good food in Scotland is easy to find in all kinds of places – yet Valvona & Crolla has got even better and is still setting the pace.

It was actually in 1934 that Valvona & Crolla set out to offer the highest standards of product and service, sourcing from the best Scottish suppliers as well as the finest Italian delicacies. Today, it is famed for having some of the best selections of quality food and wine, receiving in 2004 an acknowledgement as ‘one of the top 5 independent food shops in the UK’ in the Observer Food Monthly, ‘the best Italian Delicatessen in the UK’ in The Observer and the ‘The UK’s Best Independent Cheese Retailer’ in The Grocer magazine.

The accolades continue to pile up. With a list of over 1000 wines, Valvona & Crolla has been awarded International Wine Challenge Scottish Wine Merchant of the Year (fifth time in six years) and Which? Wine Guide Italian Wine Specialist of the Year 2005. And the malt whisky selection is one of the best in Scotland

The owning family, the Continis, carry with them a deep knowledge of food and wine, which has taken them to the forefront of British food retailing for four generations. They source products from small, artisan producers and farmers, who, like them, are committed to selling, pure, flavoursome produce which both excite and nourish. They import fresh fruit and vegetables direct from markets in Milan and Paris, as well as sourcing seasonal Scottish produce from local growers. Their on-site bakery produces bread and pastries for the shop and other local businesses. They also have a Royal Warrant to supply HM The Queen when in Scotland.

Customers can also enjoy the flavours of Italy in the family’s restaurants. Reflecting the style and energy of Scotland’s capital in the 21st century, the Continis built on the success of the Caffè Bar within the original Valvona & Crolla shop, and recently opened VinCaffè in the retail ‘hotspot’ of Multrees Walk. With the first restaurant securing a reputation as a place to experience authentic Italian home cooking, the new venture continues the theme of sociable eating and drinking in the Italian style.

Customers just have to step into the Valvona & Crolla shop to experience all the energy and warmth of a family business whose reputation for quality and authenticity has, over the generations, gone far beyond the city boundaries. The flavour of Valvona & Crolla is simply an essential element of the Edinburgh food experience.
