Prince Charles presented with Royal tweed
Highland producer Mey Selections presented Prince Charles, the Duke of Rothesay, with a special Royal tweed at the new Johnstons Heritage Centre.
The Mey Estate Tweed was designed and manufactured by world leading textiles and cashmere producers Johnstons of Elgin, and developed in conjunction with Prince Charles - the inspiration behind the brand.
Louise Sullivan, Senior Fabric Designer at Johnstons, said: "Mey Selections is the brand name given to an initiative started by the Duke of Rothesay to give back fair-trade to North Highland producers.
"The main products in the range are premium quality beef and lamb and as a by-product we were provided with the fleeces of the sheep to spin into yarn and ultimately weave into tweed."
The Duke and Duchess of Rothesay viewed the weaving of the tweed, which was done in one of the few traditional mills left in the country.
Produced in a lovat colour for practical usage, Castle of Mey Tweeds also come in a softer light grey design - both are inspired by the remote, unspoilt environment of the North Highlands and the coastal location of the Castle of Mey.
The new tweeds epitomise the values of the Mey Selections brand in that they utilise the fleeces of sheep from the North Highlands and the local design and manufacturing skills of Johnstons.
This guarantees the provenance and quality of the wool and promotes jobs and skills in the region, supporting sustainable and long-term business growth for farmers and local people.
The tweeds complement the Mey Selections range which includes honeys, conserves, whisky, biscuits, oatcakes and shortbread as well as premium beef, lamb and seafood sourced from within 100 miles of The Castle of Mey.
