Edinburgh newcomer The Dogs was given top billing for 'originality and commitment'.

Another addition to the Capital's eating out scene is Wedgwood, which has been recognised for offering an 'inventive higher-end' dining experience.

Glasgow's Nanakusa won best newcomer for 'affordability and innovation', while Two Fat Ladies - The Buttery was chosen for 'destination and elegance'.

For the first time readers of The List voted for their favourite gastro-haunts, with the introduction of the Readers' Award in association with Taste of Edinburgh.

Merchant City-based Guy's took the title for Glasgow, while readers also plumped for Urban Angel in Edinburgh.

Editor of the Eating and Drinking Guide, Donald Reid said: 'The number of new openings included this year is proof that Edinburgh & Glasgow have two of the most dynamic dining scenes outside Edinburgh.'

He added: 'Restaurants are increasingly recognising the value of local, seasonal and identifiable food.'

The Judges' Special Award went to Andy Lane of Loch Fyne Oysters for his 'ethical championing of rural Scottish produce in Great Britain and internationally'.
