EatScotland Says:
A perfectly located restaurant at the head of a cove overlooking the fishing boats off Arran which provides a variety of the fish offerings. The locally sourced, mainly Kintyre produce is a joy to experience. Owner/ Chef, Alan Milstead provides a changing menu celebrating the larder of the West Coast of Scotland which is particularly renowned for its Seafood and Fish dishes.

We had such a lovely meal the first time we went here while on holiday that we went back again 2 nights later. The atmosphere was very homely, with drinks in the lounge and everyone sitting down to dinner at the same time. The food was fantastic, with locally sourced ingredients, lovely fresh seafood and eggs from the chickens in the garden. When we booked for the second visit I was asked if I'd like any particular fish, and locally landed langoustines were produced as requested! The meal and service were faultless and the co-owner entertained us with his wonderfully dry sense of humour. The wine list was very interesting, and we were introduced to the delights of Loch Fyne liqueur. Definitely recommended.

What a lovely location and Alyson & Alan made us feel most welcomed. I booked Dinner for my husbands and I and casually mentioned it was for my husband's birthday. When we arrived at our table there was Happy Birthday and heart shaped confetti on the table which I thought was a lovely touch. The food was delicious and I certainly would recommend this beautiful hotel to anyone who likes fine dining with a friendly atmosphere.

The room was comfortable and had everything that could have been needed - including binoculars to gain a better view of the stunning scenery. Definitely somewhere to return to = we should have booked for longer.

Arriving with our bicycles we were given a warm welcome with a rapidly provided pot of tea with delicious homemade shortbread before being taken to a beautifully appointed bedroom with view over the pretty bay while the bikes were stowed safely at the back of the house The scallops served for our starter at dinner were generous and superbly fresh and it was clear that care is taken to source ingredients locally. The breakfast scrambled eggs with smoked salmon wer especially memorable.

We stayed for two nights at the end of August 2011. The Hotel is in a beautiful, quiet location over looking a small bay. The food is mainly locally sourced and cooked to perfection. Our room was very comfortable and well appointed with good toiletries. Our welcome was warm and tea//coffee and home made shortbread presented on our arrival. We hope to return before too long.

A wonderfully relaxing environment to escape from the day-to-day world. Comfortable room with an idyllic view of the beach & the majesty of Arran in the background. Excellent food at breakfast and dinner, the latter with a choice from an imaginative and delicious menu. Outside tables overlooking the bay at which to enjoy a pre-dinner drink(weather permitting!) The owners Alyson & Alan are excellent hosts and extremely knowledgeable about the places of interest in the surrounding area, and enthusiastic about ensuring their guests have an enjoyable stay.

Beautifully situated hotel. We were met on the doorstep by Alan who informed us that we had a free upgrade to a better room. Arrived too late for dinner but had a relaxing few drinks in the lounge and were more than ready for the excellent breakfast the next morning of locally produced ingredients including home made potato scones and eggs from hens kept in the back yard. Weather was brilliant and midges few and far between and we spent the day roaming around the peninsula taking picture after picture of the magnificent scenery. Dinner that evening was for me mussels to start, followed by a seafood kebab containing salmon, scallops and monkfish in a light and tasty sauce cooked to perfection by Alyson. We had a wonderful weekend and were reluctant to leave, but needs must. We will return.

We visited Dunvallanree whilst staying in Carradale last week. As before the ambience was relaxed & welcoming. Allan has a very relaxed & unpretentious manner & nothing is too much trouble. The food is first class with some interesting combinations, most locally produced & all excellently cooked to order. A short but quite acceptable wine list and a very extensive selection of malts. We'll be back & will spread the word.

I awoke early yesterday morning with the sun shining through the open window and the silence broken only by the sound of seabirds and the waves lapping gently on the shore of Port Righ Bay. For the past eight years we have made an annual and some times bi-annual visit with friends to our favourite small hotel. These holidays have been at different times of the year so the weather has varied but the excellence of “Dunvalanree” has never wavered. Alyson and Alan deserve all the accolades that they have had in the past. I put Alyson’s name first as this website focuses on good food, although Alan did admit to me on this visit that on one occasion he did help to peal the carrots. Alyson is a gifted chef who makes excellent use of local produce. A glance down the other reviews will confirm this but I must just mention the Kilbrannan scallops, the rack of Saddell lamb and the slow roast crispy pork. The most difficult part of our holiday has always been making the choice of courses from a menu that changes every day. Details of the breakfasts can also be found in other reviews and I would only confirm that it is a Scottish breakfast that has not been surpassed in my life so far Alan with his wonderful dry sense of humour, which has been mentioned in other reviews, creates a warm and friendly atmosphere in the lounge and dining room in the evening. He also has a great knowledge of wine, whisky and if you are new to Carradale, he will offer sound advice as to what to see and do around Kintyre always accompanied by an amusing anecdote. We have already made our booking for our next visit. Thanks to Alan and Alyson for wonderful holidays on Kintyre.

The fantastic position of the hotel overlooking Port Righ Bay was matched by the superb food cooked by Alyson. We saw the quail eggs being collected from the garden and sampled them a couple of hours later at Dinner. This was the only Hotel during our stay in Scotland which offered freshly squeezed orange juice for breakfast and home baked shortbreads on the courtesy tray in the bedroom. Alan was for the most part, the 'front of house' and proved a convivial host with a dry sense of humour. He offered a fine selection of wines and whiskies. Our stay could not be faulted. Excellent in every way.

This was our second visit to Dunvalanree and our only disappointment was that they were busy and we could only stay for one night. The food was excellent freshly prepared and selected from an imaginative menu. This was complemented by a fine selection of wines and real ales. The atmosphere created by the hosts was reflected by the friendly camaraderie of the guests. This is a very comfortable and cosy little hideaway. We almost certainly will be visiting again.

Eight North Walians decended on Dunvalanree on a windy and very wet night. We were met at the door and given a warm and hospitable welcome and shown into what seemed to be their lounge. The menu was not large but it was obvious all produce had come from within a few miles. We all chose well and I had scallops which the size of I have never seen before!! The taste was such a fresh sea taste which was complemented by the salmon. My friend on my right had steak and no sound came from him until everything was cleared from the plate. Some had Crannacan and some a chocolate pudding, all were just brilliant. The chef has exquisite taste buds and serves her food well with perfect proportions. We all loved the chef's amusee, celeriac and horseradish, just yummee.
Mr Alan Milstead although pretending to be carefree, had a wonderful dry sense of humour and ran the restaurant on oiled wheels.
PS The rain had stopped when we finished our meal whopee!!

10 Best Restaurants with Rooms around the UK - Ask Alan to open up his under-stairs cupboard and you'll find a whisky-lovers' box of delights - he's quite the buff, with a formidable collection. It's his wife who's the cook here, showing off local crab, haggis and lamb a treat in the art deco-windowed dining room. Bedrooms are no less comfortable for being slightly old-fashioned. Winter visitors are most likely to warm up on walks around Kintyre and tours of the Springbank whisky distillery in nearby Campbeltown; deer stalking and grouse-shooting can be arranged via the Killean Estate website. - Original review taken from: http://extras.uk.msn.com/food-and-drink/photos.aspx?cp-documentid=157382301&page=8

We went to Carradale 12-21 August, but didn't manage to book ourselves in for a meal. So, because we loved Carradale so much, we went back the following weekend, where we got engaged, and ate at The Dunvalanree Hotel on Friday AND Saturday night! From the moment we arrived for drinks in the lounge right through the evening when we finished off with coffee in the lounge - we were treated fantastically. Alan was a brilliant host, calm, relaxed and very friendly, and Alyson's cooking was to die for. Freshly cooked We would recommend an evening at The Dunvalanree to everyone, and we will certainly be going again in the future. The whole feel was homely, and you just couldn't help but interact with the other guests. Great service, fantasic food and wonderful scenery made a very special engagement meal, one that we will always remember.

Managed to get the last table available for a surprise meal for my wife's birthday and were highly delighted with the service and food. The appetizer of cream of asparagus soup was a surprise as we weren’t expecting it, and it tasted marvelous. We both followed this with crab wrapped in smoked salmon for starter & sea bass for my wife for mains, with me enjoying the halibut. My wife said ‘that was the best sea bass I have ever eaten.’ Pudding was a strawberry fool for my wife with me having some local cheeses with oatcakes. All was washed down by a lovely bottle of white wine which was excellently recommended by our host.
A very pleasant evening!

Food all quite superb, and the owner was a perfect host presenting much of it himself. The only reservation was that having ordered over drinks, we sometimes had to wait nearly an hour until ALL the guest's meals were ready before we could eat. We were only allowed into the dining room "en masse"! we noticed one or two of the places we stayed at recently have started to do this, and we are not really in favour!
I must also say it had leaked out that it was my birthday and they made a lovely fuss of me!!!!

Our host makes everyone feel special and the smallness of the dining room generates an intimate and warm atmosphere. This was our first experience of a country house type hotel where guests chat to each other before and after the meal and enjoy the bonmomie. Hopefully we will return next year.

I and a friend stayed at Dunvalanree recently and of the three hotels we stayed at we both agreed this was the best. I liked the relaxed friendly atmosphere, Alan's sense of humour and Alyson's delicious food. The position of the hotel is stunning and ideal for walkingwhich we both like to do.

We were recommended to the Dunvalanree whilst camped in our motorhome at a nearby site. We decided to call for coffee one morning to see what it was like and we were very impressed by the location and the hospitality we were shown even though we onbly went for coffee, we returned in the evening for a meal, which was absolutley suberb, in fact we cannot remember when we had a nicer meal, and it was really lovely for David to be able to have a gluten free meal with no hassle, any meal was adapted to suit his needs. we highly recommend the Dunvalanree, we would certainly go back there.

We were introduced to "Dunvalanree" through the generosity of my sister and brother-in-law, Pauline and Iain Macdonal who judiciously selected this superb small family hotel for the celebration of their 40th Wedding Anniversary. We were delighted to be invited to a hotel for lunch, dinner, bed and breakfast, but we had absolutely no idea what was in store for us. First of all the location ... stunning!! The hotel is situated right on a beautiful sandy bay. "Dunvalanree's" beautiful, almost tropical, gardens sweep down to the beach. The entrance to the hotel is impressive with a strong sense of being in Scotland. Alan showed us to our room which was well appointed and finished to a very high standard. The family group gathered for an informal lunch of home-made soup and delicious sandwiches, followed by tea/coffee and home-made shortbread. Following lunch we made our choices from the dinner menu. Everything is cooked to order and it is clearly helpful if Alyson has an indication of what to prepare. The hotel is well placed to explore the surrounding area before gathering in the comfortable lounge for beautifully chilled champagne. Dinner was exquisite. There were too many "oooohs and aaaahs" to count.
Three of our party had to leave rather early in the morning but their request for an early breakfast was readily accommodated. They made their choices from a very long list of enticing dishes. The rooms did not only look very nice but afforded luxurious comfort. Breakfast was truly excellent and it was with great regret that we took our leave of Alyson, Alan and "Dunvalanree". It is something of a surprise that there have been no "professional" reviews of this superior hotel. Food critics should be beating a path to their door, and would certainly not retreat disappointed. Pauline and I celebrated our ruby wedding anniversary at Dunvalanree, Alan &Alyson had decorated the rooms with ruby cushions and the table with ruby flowers. All our guests were easily relaxed into the casual laid back presentation from our hosts. The standard of food, presentation and attention to detail was exceptional. we are returning later this year to once again sample the delights of the house and meet again Alan and Alyson. Ix & Px

After spending a couple of busy days in Paris, we decided to have a quiet break in our favourite part of Scotland. Despite having visited Kintyre many times over the last 25 years, this was the first time we had been to Dunvalnaree. Without a doubt, this is the best small hotel we have ever visited. Indeed, better than any large hotel either! The warm welcome, coffee and that fabulous shortbread in the lounge, the most comfortable bed we've ever slept in away from home, and of course, the food. Sublime. We hope to return again soon.

The superb food from Alyson and wonderful, warm, friendly hospitality created by Alan was exactly as it has been described in other reviews. Janette's particular delight was the wonderful Gluten Free nature of the menu that Alyson provided - it was the first time that Janette had ever been able to select freely from a complete menu without restrictions and without any compromise in the quality of the food for others. Our stay could not have been more enjoyable. We will definitely be back and wil be recommending Dunvalanree to all our friends

Could not find fault with this restaurant - both dinner and breakfast were expertly prepared. It was nice to see good local produce cooked to perfection. A relaxed ambience which matched the setting and made for a very restful stay. An added bonus was the offer of tea and coffee in the lounge when we checked in which was served with delicious homemade shortbread. The level of attention to detail is to be commended.

What a find! It was our first time in the area, but it certainly won't be our last. Carradale itself is beautiful, but to come across this hotel just put the icing on the cake. The "house party" atmosphere in the lounge pre dinner, shared with other guests, set the tone for a quite exceptional meal. Full marks to Alyson and Alan for providing comfortable accommodation, excellent food and a very warm welcome.

My husband's family have holidayed in Carradale since he was a child and have many fond memories of this idyllic spot on the Mull of Kintyre. The 9 hole golf course provides the perfect opportunity to enjoy playing golf with a backdrop of spectacular views of Arran.
Dunvalanree provides the perfect base for staying in this lovely spot. Comfortable rooms with your every need catered for including Alyson's delicious shortbread! When it's time to gather for dinner there's the option of a drink on the terrace and soak up the view or in the lounge and chat with your fellow diners.
Alyson's menus are always interesting and varied including the best of local produce. The cooking is superb and Alan is always on hand to ensure you are well cared for. The wine list is not extensive but never disappoints and a bottle of champagne is excellent value for money!
Breakfast is equally superb - fresh eggs and local black pudding. Everything prepared to order and the perfect start to another day on the golf course! Just make sure you stay at least 2 nights to make the most Dunvalanree.

This small family-run hotel is in an idyllic location overlooking a peaceful, secluded bay. The hosts, Alan and Alyson Milstead, create a relaxed and sociable atmosphere, which makes guests feel immediately welcome and 'at home'. The food, cooked to order by Alyson, is nothing short of delicious. An impressive variety of fresh local produce (including eggs from the hotel's own chickens and quails) is cooked to perfection with flair and imagination and is fit to tickle even the most discerning palate. Definitely one to revisit!

I have holidayed in Carradale since I was five and take my wife Dorothy and family there every year. In recent years we have made a point of eating at Dunvalenree each time we visit. Dinner guests are made every bit as welcome as those staying at the hotel. The location is beautiful with stunning views. The interior of the building is very fine and a leisurely aperitif in the sitting room, conversation with other guests, while selecting from a menu filled with local produce is a pleasure which even our eleven year old son looks forward to. Seafood from the west coast is the best in the world and here it is not only fresh but cooked to perfection as is the rest of the varied and exquisitely prepared menu. Desserts are always new and never to be missed. There is is also a wine list of excellent quality and value. Take my advice and finish off with brandy and cigars in the front garden looking over the Kilbrannan Sound to Arran. Magnificent

This is a fantastic find for vegetarians. There is a specific vegetarian menu which you need to ask for when you book. Everything is cooked to order and served to all diners at the same time.Orders are taken in the lounge and, as a Londoner, I thought I would feel uncomfortable having to talk to strangers. Nothing was further from the truth and it was very relaxed. The food was superb and extremely good value as was the wine list. It was like having a chef visit and cook for you at home. Don't miss

This was our second visit to Dunvalanree and just as enjoyable as before. The situation overlooking Port Righ bay and Arran beyond is spectacular, peaceful and restful. Driving down part of the "long and winding road" from Tarbert is instantly unwinding. Dunvalanree has all you could want for a restful stay. Alyson's food is superb, beautifully prepared and presented. Alan is a friendly and genial host. The rooms are very comfortable, often with views over the bay, and with those nice finishing touches. This place is a gem. The location and scenery are stunning with hill walks through forest, coast and across a lovely wide sandy beach. Our dogs loved the walks and the welcome from Alyson and Alison and their two dogs Fingle and Benji. We arrived early but this was not a problem even though our hosts were on their way out we were made very welcome and given a key so we could settle in and let ourselves out at leisure. After a good walk we felt we deserved our much anticipated evening meal. We were not dissapointed. After drinks we settled down for a "pre starter" of butternut squash and ginger soup presented in a miniture soup tureen. The flavours were intense and the combination delicious. My starter of black pudding and quails egg salad was excellent. Matilda's contribution of home reared eggs was appreciated. Phil enjoyed haddock with prawns followed by locally produced lamb. I opted for the scallops on pureed peas. The delicate flavours were perfect. Phil finished his meal with a selection of local cheeses whilst I had chocolate pot which was yummy. Coffee in the sitting room with a couple of local malts rounded off the evening perfectly.
We slept well in our well appointed room which had lots of thoughtful touches from toiletries and robes to books and a miniture bottle of Campbeltown malt.
Breakfast was perfect. The orange juice was as fresh as it could possibly be. Loch Fyne kippers were as good as you would expect. The cooked "full house" was excellent, and a special mention must be given to the spectacularly good raspberry jam.
So what amazed us was.......... why we were the only guests? This food is a good as anything we have tasted. It is on a par with anything produced by Messrs Ramsay, White, Blumenthal and Blanc. The area is breathtakingly beautiful and everyone very welcoming.
Alyson and Alan try very hard and deserve all the awards they have had to date. If Dunvalanree was not so far off the beaten track it would have a waiting list of hopeful guests. As it is you have to make an effort to get there, but this in itself is part of the charm. I suggest you make the effort because it is well worth it and perhaps you will be near the top of the queue.

A memorable combination of fabulous cuisine, beautiful facilities, and a great ambiance. We had ages 8 to 86 in our little group and we all thoroughly enjoyed the hospitality of Alan and Alyson. We had a real problem with the food because the menus were all to die for and we simply could not chose what to eat - we just wanted to have it all. The standards of cuisine and hospitality could not be faulted. The bedrooms are sumptuous and the bathrobes and slippers, shortbread and a wee dram just make it all perfect. Truly Dunvalanree has to be experienced.

Dunvalanree exceeded my expectations. Alyson's meals are absolutely delicious.. Fresh off the boat Carradale prawns and scallops cooked to perfection & if you have the opportunity to savour the 'soft as butter' superbly cooked venison fillet, do not miss it! Attention to detail is unsurpassed: organic homemade bread is served with dinner and breakfast, Alyson bakes/cooks with her own eggs (hens run around on the back lawn) and menus are derived with the season in mind. Fresh yoghurt (the richest, creamiest) is served, should you wish, at breakfast with runny honey and fresh berries: we had raspberries or blackberries). There is, of course, a full Scottish breakfast on offer sourced from Campbelltown butchers/ Loch Fyne kippers. Oh and you can stay in one of their 5 cosy well appointed rooms (egyptian high thread count cotton and thick fluffy towels/dressing gowns) lulled to sleep by the sea just feet away. There's even a little gift of fesh baked shortbread in the room should you ever feel a little in need of something.. Alan is a fine front of house: ably serving drinks (a fine reasonably priced wine list and extensive whiskey choices) and passing on local knowledge for golf/day trips/ walks or just chilling out waiting for the next meal.. Thanks all, see you again soon.

This hotel was a very pleasant surprise. The location was stunning - great views, clean air and quiet all around. The food was cooked by Alyson and was excellent both at breakfast and dinner every night (we booked in for an extra night whilst staying there). To my knowledge, all the food was locally sourced, was imaginatively cooked and presented. The eggs were very fresh from hens in the garden. Alyson & Alan (and all the staff) were very friendly and welcoming. Great bedroom with great view. Golf course very near (but we don't play!). We have very high standards and this fulfilled them all.
