Why buy local?

Scotland is famed for its delicious natural larder, and rightly so - you only have to glance at menus in award winning restaurants up and down the country to see the very best seasonal produce is served up daily.
Discover new potatoes in spring, juicy strawberries and raspberries ripening in summer, wonderful autumn game, while winter is an ideal time to serve up sumptuous scallops, lobster and mussels.
Restaurants aside, it has become increasingly important to consumers to source seasonal produce in everyday life. Farmers' markets have become a common sight in Scotland's towns and cities since the first was held in Perth in the late 90s.
From Orkney to the Scottish Borders, farmers' markets are perfect for discovering local suppliers and the delicious produce grown right on your doorstep.
The environmental benefits are huge, with less food miles and storage requirements. Rural economies and local businesses also reap the rewards.
Check out our Scottish Food in Season section and find discover when Scottish produce comes into season throughout the year - or use our interactive map to find your local farmers' market.

Scottish Food in season is essential tasting food out of season is so bland and to get our children to eat healthy balanced diets they must know what real food tastes like - at least the whiskey tastes the same all year long - a good whiskey with oatcakes and lanarkshire blue cheese is hard to beat
