List magazine names top gastro-haunts

List Eating & Drinking Guide 2008The List magazine has named the best eating out experiences in Edinburgh and Glasgow, as it launches the essential Eating & Drinking Guide 2008.

Adding more than 100 new restaurants, bistros, cafes and bars, the 15th edition of the Eating & Drinking Guide has singled out a number of establishments considered worthy of special recognition.

Edinburgh newcomer The Dogs was given top billing for ‘originality and commitment’.

Another addition to the Capital’s eating out scene is Wedgwood, which has been recognised for offering an ‘inventive higher-end’ dining experience.

Glasgow’s Nanakusa won best newcomer for ‘affordability and innovation’, while Two Fat Ladies @ The Buttery was chosen for ‘destination and elegance’.

For the first time readers of The List voted for their favourite gastro-haunts, with the introduction of the Readers’ Award in association with Taste of Edinburgh.

Merchant City-based Guy’s took the title for Glasgow, while readers also plumped for Urban Angel in Edinburgh.

Editor of the Eating and Drinking Guide, Donald Reid said: “The number of new openings included this year is proof that Edinburgh & Glasgow have two of the most dynamic dining scenes outside Edinburgh.”

He added: “Restaurants are increasingly recognising the value of local, seasonal and identifiable food.”

The Judges’ Special Award went to Andy Lane of Loch Fyne Oysters for his “ethical championing of rural Scottish produce in Great Britain and internationally”.

The Dogs is indeed where the Tijuana Yacht Club used to be on Hanover Street. The menu is 'British-styled' and promises to champion Scottish produce.

Pink Olive in Edinburgh is homely, friendly and our food was all homemade, using mainly Scottish ingredients. It was delicious - thank you.

The Black Bull in Lauder used to be wonderful and has won lots of awards, however it has changed hands and is now very poor. Unfortunatley the new owners are still displaying all the previously won awards which is dishonest to say the least and very embarrassing as the night we were there it was very busy with what were obviously lots of visitors to the borders. AVOID

The Temple Seafood restaurant in Oban must be one of the best seafood restaurants in Scotland. Fantastic sea views and freshly prepared fish dishes (very generous portions), wonderfully presented - lobster, halibut, cod, scallops....you name it and it was there. Best of all, since my son suffers from Coeliac disease, there was barely a dish with gluten in it. Potatoes were used to thicken sauces, A must for a very special evening.

Stayed with my brother and our wives at the Glenurquhart House in Balnain near Drumnadrochit in one of the Lodges which was very well equipped. For ease the first night we ate in the hotel restaurant but enjoyed it so much we ate there every night for the rest of our stay. Excellent choice and superb quality with views from the restaurant to die for. Worth a try, you won't be disappointed.
